This page is dedicated to the past shepherds of Uniontown Church of Christ.  Each made valuable contributions that helped to make Uniontown Church what it is today.
We Honor Them !

Elder William Anthony James ( 1898 to 1923)

Elder W. A. James was born in 1851.  He was instrumental in the efforts to reorganized the Mother Church in 1873.
Elder James was fondly known as (Bill Ant-ly James).

He became pastor of Uniontown Church of Christ, DOC from  about 1898.    Relying heavily on the holy scriptures; Elder James, became known as a disciplinarian and literalist.  He loved God and dedicated his life to serving the Lord.

One of his lasting  contributions resulted from his valiant fight to keep the practice of  " washing of feet"  as an intricate part of the Church.  He died in 1923 and is remembered as the Patriarch of the Church.

Elder Joseph James, Sr. (1938 to 1959)

Elder Joseph James, Sr. was born in 1895.  He was the nephew of Elder William A. James.  He believed in education for the community's youth and worked diligently  to see this promise fulfilled.

He became the pastor of Uniontown Church of Christ, DOC in 1938. Within the church he was known as a moderate.

One of his famous sayings way "hold your peace, brethren, hold your peace.  Elder James had a deep desire to grow the church.  He used his own funds to purchase a bus that was used to transport people without transportation to church services.  The Bus was also used to take the youth of community on a summer trip to the beach each year.  (Something almost unheard of during that time).

Elder J. James had an abiding love for God and the church.  Elder James died in 1959.

Elder Early Whitehurst, Sr. (1959 - 1970)

Elder Early Whitehurst, Sr. was married to Olivia James.  He believed in God and Family.  He was the father of ten Children.  He was ordained a minister at the age of thirty-one.  He served as a Sunday School teacher at Uniontown Church of Christ and desired to be of greater service.  He continued to serve the church under the leadership of pastor Joseph James, Sr.

Elder Whitehurst attended the Christian Roanoke Bible College and became the pastor of Uniontown Church of Christ upon the death of  Elder Joseph James, Sr. in 1959.  Elder Whitehurst was a compassionate leader and deeply dedicated to the work of God.

He served as a mentor to many aspiring ministers.  It has been documented he brought  at least two ministers into the service of the lord and others who's names have been lost to history.
